Welcome to ‘The Wayside Ballads Vol 2’. The Oxford Dictionary defines ‘Wayside’ as the edge of the road, figuratively meaning to be set aside or discarded. Well our songs have been described as topical, historical and most things in between, populated by characters outside of the mainstream – in many ways somewhat extraordinarily ordinary but always real. Rather than have them fall off the edge we wrote these Ballads to give them a voice and a history.
This Vol 2 of ‘The Wayside Ballads’ was made possible by and is dedicated to everyone who contributed to our crowdfunding campaign. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for making this happen. You know who you are.
The project became a reality under the guidance of Thomm Jutz – Mentor, Musician, Songwriter, Engineer, Producer and Friend. I instinctively believed that these songs were always in safe hands with Thomm. He has a philosophy which is simple. Great players and great sounds make for a great recording. We wanted to make a string band record. Lynn, Daniel, Justin and Sierra were Thomm’s choices and the brilliance and care which they brought to these songs/sessions was a revelation. We kept it as real and ‘live’ as possible and that’s just how I like it.
Pete Fidler was again right there beside me every day in the studio. His Dobro playing was masterful and I don’t think I have ever heard him recorded so beautifully. His encouragement, friendship and belief in the songs has always been a cornerstone to what I do. My co-writer and brother Ross was also along for the ride. We have been imagining these songs for a long time now and just like this. Love you brother.
Sometimes this road has its own rewards and it’s invariably always the love from friends and family that keeps you going – and especially from Ruthy and Charlie who make everything feel better when it all gets too hard.
Bookended with Volume 1,‘The Wayside Ballads’ project Ross and I dreamed is now starting to make sense. Twenty songs so far across two continents and we haven’t finished yet. We will bring it home…
